Striped Cat Studio

The Studio Kit

The paperwork a one-person studio sends, ready to use

Six documents that take a project from the first call to the final invoice, in Notion, Google Docs and PDF, and a calculator that sets your day rate from the income and the time off you want.

Six printed documents fanned out on a pale wood desk, a proposal with a three-column pricing table on top, a pencil and a mug of black coffee beside them

The Studio Kit is the paperwork of one project, start to finish: a creative brief for the first call, a proposal and a contract to agree the work, an onboarding questionnaire to start it, a change-request form for when it grows and an invoice to get paid, with a day-rate calculator to price it all. Make your own copies, add your logo and terms once, and send them under your own name.

Seven pieces, in the order a project uses them

From working out what to charge to getting paid for the work.

  1. Day-rate calculator

Start from the income you want to take home, your costs, the tax you set aside and the weeks you take off, and it works out your day rate, your hourly rate and the smallest project worth quoting. It tells you what you need to charge, not what anyone else charges.

  2. Creative brief

The questions for the discovery call: what the project is for, who it has to reach, what must be in it, what success looks like and who signs off. Fill it in with the client, and write the proposal from their answers.

  3. Proposal

Scope, deliverables, timeline, rounds of revisions, the project fee and the deposit, with a line for what is not included and a place for the client to accept. A pricing table with room for three options lets the client choose how much, rather than whether.

  4. Contract with plain-English notes

Deposit and payment terms, revision rounds, change requests, a kill fee, usage and licensing, when the files and rights pass to the client, and your right to show the work. A note beside each clause says what it does and when to change it. A starting point, not legal advice.

  5. Onboarding questionnaire

What you need once the contract is signed, asked once: who approves the work, who pays the invoices, the brand files and logins, the dates that cannot move and how the client likes to hear from you.

  6. Change-request form

For the day a client asks for something the proposal did not cover. One page records what changes, what it adds to the fee and the timeline, and the client’s signature before the work starts, so extra work is agreed and paid for, not absorbed.

  7. Invoice

A deposit invoice and a final invoice, each with your payment terms, the due date, the late fee your contract sets, a purchase-order line, a field for a tax or VAT number and every way the client can pay you.

How it works

  1. Pay

Pay at the checkout. The download page opens straight away, and the receipt email carries the same link.

  2. Copy

Duplicate the Notion templates, or make your own copies of the Google Docs and the Sheet, in the account your studio works from.

  3. Make them yours

Add your logo, your rates and your terms once; nothing you send carries our name. Every proposal, contract and invoice after that starts from your version.

Before you buy

What do I get when I pay?

A download page, and the same link by email, with a start-here PDF that holds every link: the Notion templates to duplicate into your workspace, the Google Docs and the Sheet to copy into your Drive, and the PDFs to keep. Your copies are yours to edit, and nothing you change comes back to us.

Do I need Notion?

No. Every document also comes as a Google Doc and a PDF, and a Google Doc downloads as a Word file that opens in Word or Pages, so use whichever app you already send work from. The day-rate calculator is a Google Sheet, which downloads as an Excel file.

Is the contract legal advice?

No. It is a starting point written from standard freelance practice for work in the US, with a note beside each clause saying what it does and when you might change it. Contract law varies from state to state, so for a large project, a client abroad or anything unusual, have a lawyer where you work read it before you send it.

I work outside the US. Will the kit still work?

The calculator, the creative brief, the proposal, the onboarding questionnaire and the change-request form work anywhere, and the calculator takes any currency. The invoice has a field for a VAT or tax number. The contract is written for US work: in the UK, the EU or elsewhere, have a local lawyer adapt it before you use it.

How does the day-rate calculator work?

You enter the income you want to take home in a year, your business costs, the share you set aside for tax, the weeks off you plan to take and how many days a week go to client work. It works out your day, half-day and hourly rates and the smallest project worth quoting. It tells you what your studio needs to charge, not what the market pays, and the tax share is a figure to settle with your accountant.

How many clients can I use it with?

Every client your own studio works with, for as long as you work. The kit is licensed to one studio, so please don’t resell it, share the files or pass them on to other freelancers.

Can I buy just one template?

Yes. Each piece is sold on its own. The contract is $29, the proposal and the calculator are $19 each, and the creative brief, the onboarding questionnaire, the change-request form and the invoice are $9 each. The kit is all seven for $79.

What happens when a template is revised?

The new version goes by email to everyone who bought it, at no charge.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If the kit is not what your studio needed, write to us within 30 days of buying it and we refund it in full.
